Why travelers are buying Mounjaro in Japan, and how to buy it safely and take it home
共有
On Reddit, people often talk about buying Mounjaro in Japan and taking it home. Why Japan? And if you buy it while you're traveling, how do you do it safely and get it home? Here's what to know. (Checked October 21, 2026)
Savings that "pay for the trip itself"
Here are two examples from Reddit:
- July 2025, on r/Zepbound (a forum with many US users): in a thread about buying Zepbound in Japan, the top reply was "Those kinds of savings basically pay for the trip itself!"
- August 2026, on r/MounjaroAus (an Australian forum): "Is it stupid idea to buy 6 month supply of Mounjaro in Japan?"
Buying in Japan is no longer something only a few people do.
The price gap
In the US, the manufacturer, Eli Lilly, sells Zepbound (tirzepatide, the same active ingredient as Mounjaro) directly to self-pay patients. The 2.5mg dose costs $299 a month (checked in October 2026). That's for the medicine only; the doctor's visit is extra.
At our clinic, Mounjaro 2.5mg is ¥14,980 for one month (4 pens), including the video consultation and shipping. That's about US$95 (at about ¥158 to the dollar).
The gap stays at higher doses. Our 10mg is ¥40,000 a month (about US$253), and 15mg is ¥68,000 (about US$430). In the US, direct self-pay is $699 a month for 10–15mg.
Three common worries, and our answers
1. Is an online consultation just a questionnaire?
With us, a Japanese doctor sees you by video. After payment, you fill in a health questionnaire in your own language (about 5 minutes). The doctor reads it, then checks your health over video and decides the dose. If the doctor can't prescribe, you get a full refund. We deliver genuine medicines from Japanese pharmaceutical companies. Consultations are available in English and almost any other language, with no appointment needed.
2. If I buy 6 months' supply, how do I keep it cold?
Mounjaro is stored at 2–8°C (36–46°F) and must not be frozen. In its outer box, it can be kept at room temperature, up to 30°C (86°F), for up to 21 days. We deliver it to your hotel by Sagawa Express refrigerated delivery the day after it ships (if your consultation ends by 3:00 pm Japan time, it ships the same day). You can also add a cooler bag for the trip home (S: up to 12 pens; M: up to 24 pens). On the plane, keep it in your carry-on bag. Checked bags can get cold enough to freeze it.
3. Will my country's customs let it in?
Rules differ by country. We have Taking it home guides for 9 countries and regions, including the US, Australia, and Singapore. You can add an English doctor's certificate (¥3,000) on the same screen as your medicine. It's signed by the doctor and shows your name in English letters, exactly as on your passport, plus the medicine's name, strength, and quantity. It doesn't guarantee customs clearance, but it's a document you can show when you declare.
Key rules by country
- United States: For travelers who aren't US citizens, the guideline is up to a 90-day supply. You need an English prescription or a doctor's letter, and the original container. For US citizens, though, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) says that bringing in medicine obtained abroad is illegal in most cases. If you live in the US, check before you buy.
- Australia: Up to 3 months' supply. Carry a prescription or a doctor's letter (one from a doctor overseas is OK), and declare the medicine on your Incoming Passenger Card.
- Singapore: Up to 3 months' supply. But one of the conditions is a prescription from your country of residence, so check in advance whether a Japanese prescription is enough.
- The UK and other countries not in our guides: Please ask us before you buy.
Six months' supply is more than the 3-month and 90-day guidelines. When you choose your destination on the order screen, it tells you right away if you're over the guideline, and you can switch to an amount within it with one tap. The doctor decides how much to prescribe during your consultation.
Until you go home, you can chat with us on WhatsApp, LINE, and other apps, 10:00 am–7:00 pm (Japan time). In Japan, we've shipped 50,000 orders on the same day in the past two years.
Choose your dose and amount (1 to 6 months' supply) on the product page. You can add the English certificate and a cooler bag on the same screen. Check the rules for the country you're taking it to in our Taking it home guides. If you're unsure about your travel dates or how many months you need, feel free to ask us before you order.
